Strip the zeroes off Anthropic's newest compute deal and what is left is a utility bill. The company has agreed to pay Nscale roughly $45 billion over six years for about 460 megawatts at a data center campus in Mason County, West Virginia, a facility that will not deliver a single token of inference until late 2027.
Bloomberg broke the story Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter. CNBC and Reuters matched it within hours. Neither company has confirmed it publicly, and Nscale declined to comment. The most substantive on-the-record acknowledgment came from a governor.
"The reported $45 billion agreement for computing capacity at Nscale's West Virginia campus is an extraordinary vote of confidence in our state and the strategy we put in place," Gov. Patrick Morrisey said Thursday. "We knew artificial intelligence would require extraordinary amounts of computing power, reliable energy and private investment, and we knew West Virginia had the resources to meet that demand."
What $45 billion actually buys
The site is Nscale's Monarch Compute Campus, 2,250 acres north of Point Pleasant, acquired in March when Nscale bought American Intelligence & Power Corporation. Anthropic's 460 megawatts is the first of three buildings in a planned 1.35-gigawatt first phase. The other two are slated for 2028.
The hardware is Nvidia's Vera Rubin platform, which packs 72 Rubin GPUs and 36 Vera CPUs into a liquid-cooled NVL72 rack. It has not yet shipped at commercial scale.
The power is the more interesting number. 460 megawatts is roughly what 345,000 American homes draw at any given moment, and none of it comes off the grid. Monarch is a state-certified microgrid running on natural gas: a state DEP permit application for phase one lists 864 Caterpillar G3500 reciprocating engines, about 2.16 gigawatts of on-site generation. That structure exists because of House Bill 2014, signed in 2025, which lets data centers build their own microgrids and preempts local zoning and noise rules. It shields Mason County ratepayers from the buildout. It also means the campus carbon footprint is a gas-combustion number, not a renewable-energy-certificate one. The Sierra Club has objected.
The tenant Microsoft declined to become
The sequence here is the story. In March, Nscale announced a letter of intent with Microsoft covering up to 1.35 gigawatts at Monarch, timing the news to Nvidia's GTC conference and using it to help close a $2 billion Series C at a $14.6 billion valuation.
A letter of intent is generally not binding. Bloomberg reported Microsoft walked away earlier this summer. Microsoft declined to comment and has not explained why. Anthropic took building one.
Compute as moat, and as liability
This is Anthropic's fifth major compute commitment since May, and the ledger has gotten strange. It rents the entire Colossus 1 site in Memphis from SpaceX, more than 220,000 GPUs and roughly 300 megawatts, for $1.25 billion a month through 2029, on a contract either side can cancel with 90 days' notice. AMD put $5 billion of equity into Anthropic in July alongside up to 2 gigawatts of Instinct accelerators. A $10 billion Volta deal covers 121 IT megawatts in Norway, backstopped by JPMorgan letters of credit. Google and Broadcom cover 3.5 gigawatts from 2027; Amazon added five. Contracted compute has crossed $100 billion.
Against that: annualized revenue of roughly $65 billion as of mid-August, per Bloomberg, and an annual compute bill estimated near $19 billion. The moat is real. It is also financed, increasingly by counterparties still raising the money to build it.
A company founded in 2024, underwriting a six-year obligation
Nscale was founded two years ago by Josh Payne, spun out of Melbourne crypto miner Arkon Energy. It has told prospective IPO investors it holds about $51 billion in contracted revenue. Its recognized revenue was roughly $33 million for all of 2025, about $37 million in Q1 2026, and topped $100 million in Q2, an annualized run rate near $400 million to $500 million.
The Anthropic contract is roughly 88 percent of that backlog. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan are advising a US listing targeted for as early as September, and the Series C delivered a listing-ready board including Sheryl Sandberg and Nick Clegg. Payne told CNBC last October the company had "public market ambitions" it might realize in the "back end of next year." He is on schedule.
The result is a mutual dependency between two pre-IPO companies weeks from selling stock. Anthropic's spending makes Nscale's growth story legible to public investors. Nscale's ability to build on time determines whether Anthropic has its 460 megawatts in late 2027.
What Mason County gets
An Ernst & Young study commissioned by Nscale projects 6,000 jobs over two years, including 700 permanent positions in phase one, and $105 million in tax revenue, $87 million of it to Mason County schools.
"Seven-hundred (jobs) during Phase One of this project, of these high-skilled STEM trade jobs that are going to be right here for the taking," site manager Jason Bechtle told WV MetroNews.
Seven hundred permanent jobs is a real number for Mason County. It is also 700 jobs attached to $45 billion of spending, and under HB 2014 half the microgrid tax revenue is earmarked for phasing out the state income tax, not for the host community.
What to watch
Nscale's S-1 is the document that matters. It should disclose whether the Anthropic contract is take-or-pay, what the minimum volume commitments are, and what the termination clauses look like. The SpaceX deal Anthropic signed in May has 90-day outs on both sides, and a $45 billion backlog entry with that kind of optionality is a very different asset.
After that: whether Vera Rubin ships at volume in 2027, whether the DEP signs off on 864 gas engines, and whether two of the largest offerings in market history land within a month of each other. Anthropic is reportedly pitching a $30 trillion addressable market and seeking $100 billion at roughly a $2 trillion valuation. Both stories now rest, in part, on a construction schedule outside Point Pleasant.
