ByteDance has put a full 30 seconds of AI-generated video, complete with synchronized sound, into a single model pass. That is the headline claim behind Seedance 2.5, the company's next-generation video model, which moved from an internal creator product to a public developer API in early August 2026 and immediately reset the terms of a race that already includes Google, OpenAI, Runway and Kuaishou.
The rollout has been staggered. ByteDance's Seed team unveiled Seedance 2.5 at the Volcano Engine FORCE conference in Beijing in late June, launched it as a model and creator-facing product on July 31, and opened the public developer API around August 7-8. The sequencing is itself a strategy: the model went live first inside ByteDance's own consumer apps, where it has a built-in audience, before it ever reached third-party developers.
What Seedance 2.5 actually does
The most concrete advance is duration. Where most rivals still assemble longer videos by stitching shorter segments, Seedance 2.5 generates clips of 4 to 30 seconds in a single pass, holding character identity and lighting consistent across the whole shot rather than across clip boundaries. Audio is produced together with the picture instead of layered on afterward, and a single voice, music or sound-effect track can drive pacing, beat-matching and lip-sync.
The other standout is control. Seedance 2.5 accepts up to 50 multimodal reference inputs in one generation - roughly 30 images, 10 video clips and 10 audio assets - a large jump from the nine images and three clips its 2.0 predecessor handled. That reference system is the feature ByteDance is leaning on hardest against competitors, because it lets creators lock a character or a look across many generations. The model also supports first-frame and first-and-last-frame conditioning, plus production-style tools like "white-model" control, which blocks out a shot with untextured 3D geometry before the model lights it, and green-screen background swapping.
One number came down from the pre-launch marketing: resolution. Seedance 2.5 outputs at 480p or 720p, not the higher figures floated in early announcements. It supports text-to-video, image-to-video, reference-to-video, video-edit and video-extend routes, with longer runtimes built through multi-round extensions.
Pricing is still fuzzy
ByteDance has been slower to publish an official rate card than it was for Seedance 2.0. At the June FORCE announcement the company said pricing would land before release; as of mid-July no official per-second rate had appeared. In the meantime, third-party gateways have set their own numbers. The model uses per-second billing that scales with duration, resolution and reference count, and charges only for successful generations. One provider lists it from about $0.1028 per second; under a specific BytePlus scenario, a 30-second clip runs roughly $3.09 at 480p and $6.93 at 720p. Those figures come from resellers, not ByteDance itself, and should be read as indicative rather than official.
The distribution advantage
The strategic story is less about any single spec than about where Seedance 2.5 lives. ByteDance did not launch it as a standalone research demo. It shipped as the default video engine inside Jimeng in China, Dreamina internationally, Doubao, and the Dreamina interface within CapCut - the editing app used by a very large share of the world's short-form video creators. That is a distribution channel none of ByteDance's direct rivals can match. OpenAI's Sora, Google's Veo and Runway reach users primarily through their own apps or API partners; ByteDance can put a new model in front of hundreds of millions of CapCut and TikTok-adjacent creators the day it ships.
That reach reframes the competitive question. On raw visual fidelity, independent comparisons still tend to give edges to rivals, and ecosystem integration cuts both ways. But on duration and reference-based consistency - the two things that matter most for creators producing repeatable, character-driven content at volume - Seedance 2.5's native 30-second output and 50-input reference system are being described as genuine differentiators against Sora, Veo and Kling. For a working creator, "good enough at 720p, inside the app I already edit in" can beat "marginally sharper, in a separate product."
The race is compressing
Seedance 2.5 lands in a field that is iterating on a matter of weeks, not quarters. The comparison set analysts reach for now - Veo 3.1, Kling 3.0, Sora 2 - is itself already being measured against next versions, with references to Veo 4 and Wan 2.7 appearing as the yardsticks for the next round of independent benchmarks. Each release pushes on a different axis: length, audio, resolution, controllability, price. ByteDance's bet is that owning distribution lets it win on adoption even when it does not win every benchmark.
What to watch
Three signals will show whether Seedance 2.5 becomes a global default rather than a China-first product. First, an official worldwide pricing sheet from ByteDance or Volcano Engine, replacing the reseller estimates that stand in for it today. Second, a confirmed Volcano Engine API surface with documented endpoints and rate limits for developers outside China. Third, the first independent, apples-to-apples benchmarks against Veo, Kling and Wan - the tests that will tell us whether the 30-second single-pass claim holds up outside ByteDance's own demos. Until those arrive, the safest read is that ByteDance has changed the distribution math of AI video faster than it has settled the quality debate.
