BYD Unveils Its First Humanoid Robot as Automakers Pile Into Embodied AI

The world's largest maker of electric vehicles wants to sell you a car. Increasingly, it also wants a robot to do the selling. This month, BYD is putting the first version of that idea on the showroom floor.

The Chinese automaker has confirmed it will unveil its first humanoid robot in early August at its "Di Space" experience venues, becoming the latest carmaker to translate skills honed on the assembly line into the fast-heating race for embodied artificial intelligence. BYD told the China Securities Journal on July 28 that the debut would take place at one of its offline science-education and experience centers, and the WeChat account of its Zhengzhou venue had already teased the machine with a poster on July 25.

A greeter, not a factory worker

The robot, nicknamed "Xiao Di," is being positioned first and foremost as a service humanoid rather than an industrial one. According to specifications circulating in Chinese media, it stands 1.61 meters tall, weighs 58.5 kilograms and carries 31 degrees of freedom across its body, with seven in each hand, six in each leg, three at the waist and two in the neck. Its dexterous hands can grasp objects up to one kilogram with positioning accuracy of about one millimeter, and it offers 360-degree vision, facial and gesture recognition, and real-time two-way translation across six Chinese dialects and six foreign languages.

BYD is framing the launch as an experience rather than a spec sheet. "It won't show up with a pile of specs and jargon," the teaser poster read. "Maybe when you walk closer, it moves slightly." Because Di Space is built around hands-on, interactive displays, the August event is expected to be the first public showing of a working prototype that can interact with visitors, not merely a concept reveal.

The business logic is unusually concrete for a humanoid program. Executive vice president Stella Li has said she hopes every BYD store will eventually host two or three robots to greet customers, explain features and demonstrate in-car functions, with robot sales advisors ready for real-world use within one to two years. Over the medium term, BYD envisions pushing the machines into supermarkets, shopping malls and warehouses. Li has also floated building an open platform that would produce both BYD's in-house robots and units co-developed with partners.

Notably, Li has been candid about the limits. Robots, she said, cannot replace the emotional connection between human salespeople and customers.

Why carmakers keep showing up

BYD's pitch rests on a simple argument that has become the industry's shared thesis: the AI, motor, battery and control technologies refined for electric cars transfer directly to robots. Li has said the key to winning in robotics lies in manufacturing capability alongside software and hardware strength, and that automotive and robotics technology "share the same roots."

That reasoning explains why the field is suddenly crowded with license plates. Tesla's Optimus remains the headline rival, with a low-volume Gen 3 production ramp targeted for late July into August at its converted Fremont line. In China, the roster is longer: Xpeng plans to begin mass production of its Iron humanoid by the end of the year, Chery-incubated brand Aimoga has already started selling humanoids to consumers, and SAIC-GM has put wheeled humanoids on battery assembly lines. Xiaomi, FAW, Changan, GAC and Dongfeng have all launched similar efforts.

BYD is arriving after building quietly. It stood up a dedicated embodied-intelligence team in late 2024 under its 15th Business Division, and its recruiting arm spent the following year hiring algorithm, simulation and hardware engineers.

The numbers that matter

For all the auto-industry momentum, the humanoid market is still small and unevenly real. Figure's Figure 03 passed 1,000 cumulative units this summer, with roughly 40 deployed commercially at BMW's Spartanburg plant, billed at around $25 per robot-operating-hour. China's AgiBot has reported some 15,000 cumulative humanoids produced, and Unitree has sold in the thousands. Tesla, by contrast, has never published an Optimus production count, and Elon Musk has told investors the units built so far are mostly for learning and data collection.

That gap between showroom spectacle and deployed utility is exactly what BYD's greeter strategy sidesteps. A robot that welcomes buyers and demonstrates a car does not need to match a factory arm's reliability to earn its keep as marketing hardware and a data-collection platform.

What to watch

The immediate test is the August reveal itself: whether Xiao Di is a fluid, interactive machine or a stiff mannequin, and how quickly BYD moves from one venue to a fleet across its dealer network. The next signal comes at the IEEE Humanoids conference in Santa Clara from August 16 to 22, where the research community will benchmark just how far the hardware has actually come. If BYD can bend robotics toward the same cost curve it forced onto EV batteries, the greeter in the showroom may be the least interesting part of the story.
