Databricks and Microsoft Extend Their Partnership Into the 2030s to Court Enterprise AI Buyers
Databricks and Microsoft on Wednesday extended a partnership that has run for the better part of a decade deep into the 2030s, a long-dated commitment that both companies are pitching as the foundation for the next phase of enterprise AI. The expanded agreement, announced July 23, 2026, deepens Databricks' reliance on Microsoft Azure to run its own business, threads Databricks' AI tools further through Microsoft's product stack, and puts a growing share of Databricks' compute onto Azure Cobalt, Microsoft's Arm-based silicon.
The message to corporate buyers is blunt: the two vendors intend to be standing together for years, and enterprises betting on the combined platform can plan accordingly.
What the two companies agreed to
Under the expanded deal, Databricks will run its own core business operations and analytics on Azure Databricks, the native Azure version of its data and AI platform, and build its unified lakehouse there. Running its own company on the same product it sells is a deliberate proof point. As Microsoft framed it, the move "gives customers confidence in a platform proven at enterprise scale."
The companies also committed to expanding Databricks' use of Azure Cobalt, Microsoft's next-generation Arm-based infrastructure, for what they described as agentic and data-intensive workloads. Databricks currently runs on Cobalt 100 and plans to adopt Cobalt 200, which Microsoft says delivers up to 50% better performance and ships with memory encryption enabled by default.
On the other side of the ledger, Microsoft will keep integrating Databricks' technology across its own products. That includes bringing Genie, Databricks' AI co-worker, and the Unity AI Gateway into customer workflows spanning Microsoft 365, Teams, Copilot, Power BI, OneLake, Purview and Microsoft Foundry. Genie connects users and agents to an organization's business data, while Genie Ontology supplies the business concepts and relationships needed to interpret that data. Unity AI Gateway gives companies a centralized way to govern models, agents, usage and cost.
The underlying pitch targets a persistent obstacle to enterprise AI adoption. Companies are sitting on mountains of operational data but still struggle to connect models and agents to trusted business knowledge while keeping security, governance and spending under control.
Executives frame it as a knowledge race

With Databricks Genie and Unity AI Gateway deeply integrated across Microsoft's products, we're helping enterprises unify their data and ground AI in business knowledge. This lets customers get the full benefits of agents and models while controlling costs and ensuring governance."
Judson Althoff, CEO of Microsoft Commercial Business, cast the deal as being about turning proprietary data into a competitive edge. "The next generation of AI will be defined by how effectively organizations turn their unique knowledge into intelligence," he said. "Microsoft and Databricks are helping customers connect data, AI and business context to accelerate decision-making and drive measurable impact." He added that Databricks' decision to run its own operations on Azure Databricks "gives customers confidence in a platform proven at enterprise scale."
Neither company disclosed a dollar figure for the expanded commitment.
The companies pointed to existing joint customers as evidence of traction, including Banco Bradesco, Electrolux, Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corp., Unilever and Major League Baseball's Cincinnati Reds. Databricks says more than 20,000 organizations, including roughly 70% of the Fortune 500, now use its platform.
The context: a platform war for enterprise AI
The timing is not incidental. The fight to be the system of record for enterprise AI has become one of the most contested battlegrounds in the industry, and this deal is best read as a move in that war.
Databricks' most direct rival, Snowflake, is racing to layer AI and agent capabilities atop its own data cloud, and the two trade blows at every industry summit. Meanwhile the hyperscalers are increasingly competing with, not just hosting, the data-platform vendors: Google is pushing BigQuery and its Gemini models as an integrated stack, and OpenAI is pressing into the enterprise with agents and connectors that reach directly into corporate data.
For Databricks, tying itself more tightly to Microsoft secures distribution into the vast base of Microsoft 365, Teams and Copilot users, arguably the most valuable real estate in enterprise software. For Microsoft, keeping Databricks close hedges its own bets: even as it invests in first-party data and AI tooling and its OpenAI relationship, it retains the most popular independent lakehouse as a native Azure citizen. The governance angle, centralized control over models, agents and cost through Unity AI Gateway, is aimed squarely at the concern that has slowed enterprise deployments from pilot to production.
What to watch
The open question is whether "deeply integrated" translates into differentiated capability or simply mutual dependency. Watch for how far Genie and Unity AI Gateway actually penetrate Copilot and Microsoft Foundry workflows, and whether joint customers move agentic AI from experiment to core operation. Watch, too, for how Microsoft balances this partnership against its own competing ambitions, and how Snowflake, Google and OpenAI respond. A partnership dated into the 2030s is a strong signal of intent, but in enterprise AI, the scoreboard is measured in production workloads, not press releases.
