# 3M and Microsoft Team Up on the Physical Plumbing of AI Data Centers
The company that invented Scotch tape and Post-it notes is now helping wire the backbone of the artificial-intelligence boom. On July 15, 3M and Microsoft announced a strategic partnership that puts 3M's materials-science muscle to work inside Microsoft's Azure data centers, making Microsoft the first announced hyperscale cloud provider to deploy 3M's Expanded Beam Optical (EBO) fiber-connection technology at scale.
The deal is a two-way trade. Microsoft gets a more rugged way to move light — and therefore data — through the crowded, dust-prone interiors of AI data centers. 3M, a 122-year-old industrial giant based in St. Paul, Minnesota, gets Microsoft's AI and cloud tools to overhaul its own back-office operations, from customer service to finance. It is a snapshot of how the AI race increasingly runs through unglamorous physical infrastructure rather than chatbots and chips alone.
What 3M actually brings
The centerpiece is EBO, a fiber-optic connector technology that 3M has spent years developing out of its precision-manufacturing and optics expertise. Traditional optical connectors rely on direct physical contact between fiber ends, a design that is exquisitely sensitive to contamination. A single speck of dust on a fiber face can degrade or kill a high-speed link, which is why data-center technicians spend enormous amounts of time cleaning and inspecting connections.
EBO takes a different approach. Instead of pressing two fiber tips together, it uses an expanded, spread-out beam of light across a wider optical interface. That makes the connection far more tolerant of dust and handling, faster to install, and easier to maintain in dense, high-volume deployments — exactly the conditions inside a modern AI cluster, where thousands of optical links are threaded through racks during construction and constantly serviced afterward.

According to the companies, Microsoft's early use of EBO has shown the potential to shorten network-deployment timelines in certain environments while delivering strong signal performance in live conditions where dust exposure and routine handling are the norm. 3M says it is scaling production to meet accelerating demand from hyperscalers and helped establish an EBO Multi-Source Agreement — an industry standardization pact intended to encourage broader adoption beyond a single vendor or customer.
The other half of the deal
In exchange, 3M is deploying Microsoft's AI and digital platforms across its own enterprise, targeting customer service, finance, sales and marketing. One concrete example: Microsoft's newly launched Frontier program is embedding engineers with 3M's Global Business Services team to build an AI agent-driven workflow for managing customer orders — automating credit checks, delinquency assessments and system updates, with human-in-the-loop controls and a custom monitoring dashboard. The companies say it should cut manual effort, speed up cash flow and free staff for higher-value work.

"Our collaboration with Microsoft supports that vision through targeted optimization opportunities for our enterprise while advancing the infrastructure needed to power the future of AI."
Neither company disclosed a dollar value for the partnership. Both framed it as an open-ended, multi-year collaboration, with plans for continued "bench-to-bench" engineering work across Microsoft's data-center and device ecosystem — a hint that optical connectors may be only the first of several 3M technologies to find their way into Azure.
Why it matters
For all the attention lavished on GPUs and frontier models, the hardest constraints on AI's growth are increasingly physical: power, cooling and the sheer logistics of connecting hundreds of thousands of accelerators together. Optical interconnects are the nervous system that lets those chips act as one machine, and their reliability directly governs how fast a data center can be stood up and how much it costs to keep running. A connector that resists dust and cuts inspection time is not a footnote — at hyperscale, it compounds into weeks of deployment time and meaningful uptime.
That is why 3M's role is telling. Materials science is a genuine moat. 3M's edge in optics, films, adhesives and thermal management — the same portfolio that includes dielectric immersion-cooling fluids like its Fluorinert and Novec lines — is hard-won and hard to replicate, and it maps neatly onto the AI buildout's biggest pain points. Hyperscalers can design their own chips and write their own software, but they still need someone who knows how to make light travel cleanly through a contaminated rack.
The partnership also marks a broader pattern: legacy industrial companies pivoting toward AI infrastructure as a growth engine. For 3M, which has spent recent years restructuring and shedding legacy liabilities, becoming a picks-and-shovels supplier to the cloud giants offers a credible new demand story — and a stock the market has been reappraising as an AI-adjacent play.
What to watch
The open question, flagged by industry analysts, is scale. EBO is promising in pilots, but 3M must ramp high-volume manufacturing fast enough to keep up with hyperscaler demand — and prove the Multi-Source Agreement can turn its proprietary edge into an industry standard without commoditizing it. Watch whether other hyperscalers follow Microsoft's lead, whether the partnership expands from optical connectors into 3M's cooling and thermal-materials portfolio, and whether the enterprise-AI side of the deal delivers measurable results 3M is willing to quantify. If both halves work, this becomes a template for how industrial materials firms plug into the AI economy.
