Runway is betting that the winner of the AI video race will not be the model that renders the most beautiful frame, but the one that renders a good-enough frame before the creative director changes their mind. This week the New York startup pushed that bet further, rolling out Gen-4 Turbo, a faster-inference build of its flagship video model that the company says cuts generation time by roughly 60% while holding quality close to its standard Gen-4 line.

For a category defined by minutes-long waits and burned credits, speed is the whole pitch. Gen-4 Turbo renders a 10-second clip in about 30 seconds, and prices it at 5 credits per second of finished video — cheap enough, Runway argues, to treat generations as disposable drafts rather than precious final takes.

What Runway actually shipped

Gen-4 Turbo is an image-to-video and text-to-video model that outputs at 24 frames per second in 720p-class resolutions across several aspect ratios, supporting both 5-second and 10-second durations. The headline change is not the picture but the clock: where standard Gen-4 can leave users watching a progress bar, Turbo is tuned for near-real-time iteration, letting creators test multiple directions in the time a single high-fidelity render used to take.

The credit math is the quiet story. At 5 credits per second, a 10-second clip runs 50 credits. Runway's free tier hands new users a one-time allotment of 125 credits — about 25 seconds of Turbo — while paid plans start at $15 a month for 625 monthly credits and scale to unlimited generation on higher tiers. That undercuts much of the field on cost, a deliberate move as rivals push resolution and audio.

Turbo also slots alongside Aleph, Runway's in-context video editing model, which lets users restyle, relight, remove objects and change camera angles on existing footage rather than generating from scratch.
