What the two companies are building
The collaboration, formalized in a joint statement, splits the early work into two complementary tracks. In Roche's pathology business, ABB will develop robots to handle and organize slides, supporting the shift toward digital, connected pathology workflows. In central diagnostics labs — Roche's largest testing segment — ABB will deploy autonomous mobile manipulators: robots that combine a mobile base with a manipulator arm to move samples and materials between instruments without fixed tracks or conveyors.
The pitch is flexibility. Traditional lab automation locks instruments into rigid, hard-wired lines. Mobile manipulators can reroute on the fly, connecting islands of equipment and taking on the repetitive fetch-and-carry work that consumes technician time. The companies framed sample preparation and intra-logistics — the internal movement of specimens — as the first bottlenecks they intend to attack.
Why now
The timing is driven by strain. Roughly 70 percent of treatment decisions rely on diagnostic testing, yet labs worldwide are short-staffed as fewer professionals enter demanding, intensive roles. Aging populations and the move toward personalized medicine are simultaneously pushing test volumes and complexity higher. The result is a widening gap between what labs are asked to produce and the people available to produce it.

The physical-AI angle
The deal is a marquee example of a broader trend sweeping healthcare. "Physical AI" refers to robots that learn from real-world data and adapt to dynamic, unstructured environments rather than following pre-programmed paths — the same paradigm chipmakers and robotics firms have been pushing for factories and warehouses, now aimed at the lab. A clinical lab is an appealing proving ground: high-value, repetitive, tightly regulated, and desperate for throughput.
For ABB, the move deepens a lab-automation strategy it has been telegraphing all year, including AI-enabled lab robotics demos at the SLAS 2026 conference in February. It also lands during a period of upheaval for the unit: earlier in 2026, ABB agreed to sell its robotics division to Japan's SoftBank, a reminder that the business making these healthcare bets is itself changing hands.
