# Boston Dynamics Puts the Electric Atlas Into Production With Google DeepMind's Gemini Brain
The company that spent two decades teaching robots to backflip has decided that acrobatics were never the point. When Boston Dynamics rolled the production version of its all-electric Atlas humanoid onto a Las Vegas stage at CES 2026, the news was not that the robot could move. It was that Atlas is now a product headed to a factory floor, and that its mind will be built by Google DeepMind.
Announced January 5 during Hyundai Motor Group's CES media presentation, the partnership reunites Boston Dynamics with its former parent company after nearly a decade apart and marks the clearest signal yet that the humanoid-robot race has moved from hardware demos to shipping units. Atlas is in production. The first machines are headed to Hyundai's plant in Savannah, Georgia. And the software steering them will be DeepMind's Gemini Robotics foundation models.
From Athletic Intelligence to a Working Product
For years, Atlas was a research platform famous for parkour and dance routines. That version is retired. The commercial Atlas is fully electric, and its spec sheet reads like an industrial tool rather than a viral video star: 56 degrees of freedom, rotational joints that can swivel in ways no human limb can, human-scale hands with tactile sensing, and 360-degree cameras that let it track people approaching from any direction. It can lift up to 110 pounds and is built for the repetitive, load-bearing tasks that dominate manufacturing.
"Making Atlas into a product requires more than athletic performance," said Alberto Rodriguez, Director of Robot Behavior for Atlas at Boston Dynamics. "For humanoids to really deliver on their promise, they have to be able to interact with people naturally." Boston Dynamics only committed to building a commercial humanoid in 2024, after concluding that AI advances had finally made real-world deployment plausible rather than aspirational.
Why DeepMind, and Why Now
The hardware was the easy part. Boston Dynamics has always been able to build extraordinary machines; what it lacked was a general-purpose brain capable of letting one robot handle wildly different jobs without being reprogrammed for each. That is precisely what DeepMind's Gemini Robotics models — visual-language-action systems built on the multimodal Gemini foundation model — are designed to provide.
"We are building the world's most capable humanoid, and we knew we needed a partner that could help us establish new kinds of visual-language-action models for these complex robots," Rodriguez said. "Nobody in the world is better suited than DeepMind to build reliable, scalable models that can be deployed safely and efficiently across a wide variety of tasks and industries."
Carolina Parada, Senior Director of Robotics at Google DeepMind, framed the ambition in terms of learning rather than programming. "Rather than having a set of predefined, loaded tasks onto the robot, we think robots should understand the physical world the same way we do," she said onstage. "Whether it is to assemble a new car part or to tie your shoelaces, robots should learn the same way we do from a handful of examples, and then get better very quickly with a little bit of practice."
Atlas will be the first test case for the joint research, which both companies say will begin in earnest in the coming months and run at both organizations' labs.
Hyundai's Manufacturing Bet
The commercial logic runs through Hyundai, Boston Dynamics' majority shareholder. Atlas is headed to Hyundai's Metaplant in Savannah, Georgia, with the automaker planning to deploy the robots for parts-sequencing tasks by 2028. To feed the models, Hyundai is opening a Robot Metaplant Application Center, or RMAC, that will teach robots how to execute movements such as lifts and turns; that training data gets combined with real-world data from the Georgia factory to continuously improve performance.
Boston Dynamics is not starting from zero on deployment. Its quadruped Spot is already in customers' hands across more than 40 countries, and its Stretch warehouse robot has unloaded more than 20 million boxes globally since launching in 2023. Atlas is the next, and most ambitious, rung on that ladder.
The Foundation-Model Race Is the Real Story
Strip away the branding and the 2026 humanoid contest is increasingly a fight over whose foundation model becomes the standard "brain." Tesla has pushed Optimus with its own end-to-end neural networks trained on the same vision stack as its cars. Figure broke away from OpenAI to build its Helix model in-house. Boston Dynamics has taken the opposite path, betting that DeepMind — a frontier lab whose entire premise is generalization across hardware — can do for robots what large language models did for text.
That choice reframes the competition. The winners of the humanoid era may not be the companies with the most graceful machines but the ones whose robots learn fastest from the fewest examples and adapt to a task they have never seen. Boston Dynamics is wagering that world-class hardware plus a world-class model beats trying to do both alone. It is a notably different philosophy from the vertically integrated approach at Tesla and Figure, and 2026 will start to reveal which bet pays off.
What to Watch Next
The near-term milestones are concrete. Watch for the first Gemini-powered Atlas units to actually reach the Savannah plant this year and for early results from the RMAC training pipeline — the proof will be in whether Atlas can generalize across sequencing tasks without hand-coded routines. Watch, too, for how Hyundai's plans to scale robot production stack up against Tesla's and Figure's stated ambitions. And watch DeepMind: if Gemini Robotics performs on Atlas, expect Google to pitch it as a horizontal platform for humanoids far beyond Boston Dynamics — the Android of physical AI. That, more than any single robot, is the outcome that would reshape the industry.
