Blackstone is preparing to plant one of the largest private-capital flags yet in Asia's artificial-intelligence buildout, telling investors it intends to pour roughly $30 billion into AI data centers in Japan over the next three to five years — a bet that the world's compute shortage, not an AI bubble, is the risk worth pricing in.
The plan, disclosed by Blackstone President and Chief Operating Officer Jonathan Gray in an interview with Japanese business daily Nikkei, would make Japan one of the single largest destinations for the firm's global data-center strategy. Gray framed the commitment as a deliberate contrarian call at a moment when many investors are fretting about overspending on graphics chips and warehouses full of servers.
"There's a lot of concern that there's going to be a bubble in compute building," Gray told Nikkei. "I actually think the risk is there's a shortage."
The Numbers Behind the Bet
Blackstone is not starting from zero in Japan. The firm has already developed more than 500 megawatts of data-center capacity in the country and is now in discussions to develop facilities exceeding 1 gigawatt — a scale Gray likened to the output of a nuclear reactor.
Much of that muscle traces back to AirTrunk, the Asia-Pacific hyperscale platform Blackstone acquired in 2024 for A$24 billion alongside Canada's CPP Investments. That deal handed Blackstone one of the region's largest data-center operators overnight, and the Japan campaign is in large part an AirTrunk story. In December, the Blackstone-backed operator earmarked roughly $8 billion to expand its Japanese footprint, and in March 2026 it secured a record ¥191.6 billion (about $1.24 billion) green loan to grow its Tokyo AI campus.
The $30 billion figure — which spans equity, debt and development spending over a multi-year horizon rather than a single check — sits alongside a broader Blackstone push into the region. In June, the firm closed its largest Asia-focused private-equity fund to date at $13.1 billion, and Gray said Japan could become as important a destination for that vehicle as India.
A Company Betting Against the Bubble

Skeptics point to circular financing arrangements among chipmakers, model developers and cloud providers, warning that capacity could outrun real demand. Blackstone's regional data-center map already extends beyond Japan. The firm backed India's Lumina CloudInfra — which had roughly 600 megawatts of planned capacity before being folded into AirTrunk in April 2026 — and invested $250 million in convertible notes from China's VNET back in 2022. The Japan commitment deepens what is fast becoming one of the most aggressive institutional data-center portfolios in Asia.

The announcement is also a marker of how far private capital has flooded into data centers. What was once the province of telecom carriers and hyperscalers is now a destination for the world's largest alternative-asset managers, who see AI-driven demand as a decades-long, inflation-linked cash flow. That points to the binding constraint: power. A 1-gigawatt buildout is not a real-estate problem so much as an electricity problem.
