Qualcomm in Talks to Acquire Jim Keller's Tenstorrent for $8–10 Billion
Qualcomm, the mobile-chip giant that long ruled the smartphone but has struggled to find a foothold in the AI data center, is in talks to acquire Tenstorrent, the AI-chip startup led by legendary processor architect Jim Keller, in a deal that could value the company at between $8 billion and $10 billion. If completed, it would rank among the most expensive acquisitions in Qualcomm's history and the largest semiconductor takeover since Broadcom swallowed VMware.
The talks, first reported by The Information in mid-June 2026 and quickly corroborated by Reuters, Tom's Hardware and The Register, remain at an early stage. Neither company has commented publicly, and people familiar with the matter cautioned that no deal is guaranteed. Intel has also reportedly expressed interest, raising the prospect of a bidding contest for one of the industry's most coveted engineering teams.
A Valuation That Tripled in a Year
The price tag is striking. As recently as last year, Tenstorrent was seeking roughly $800 million from investors at a valuation of about $3.2 billion, according to The Information — and it was not even clear that round closed. The $8–10 billion figure now on the table represents a 2.5x to 3x jump in barely twelve months, a leap that says as much about the scarcity of credible Nvidia alternatives as it does about Tenstorrent's revenue, which remains modest next to established accelerator vendors.
Analysts at Tom's Hardware framed the math bluntly: paying $8–10 billion for a hardware business this small "would be difficult to justify" on products alone. "The more compelling explanation is people," the outlet noted. Tenstorrent has assembled what Tom's Hardware called "one of the industry's strongest collections of CPU, AI, interconnect, compiler, and systems architects," staffed with engineers poached from AMD, Apple, Intel and Tesla.
That talent thesis fits Qualcomm's playbook. The company did not buy Nuvia in 2021 because it lacked Arm licenses; it bought the team behind the Oryon CPU cores that now power Snapdragon laptops and phones. A Tenstorrent deal would follow the same logic, layering on the open-architecture expertise Qualcomm has been assembling through its purchases of Alphawave Semi and RISC-V CPU designer Ventana Micro.
The Man at the Center
Jim Keller is the rare chip designer whose name moves markets. He helped architect the AMD K8 and the Zen cores that resurrected AMD, designed Apple's A4 and A5 mobile chips, and led silicon work on Tesla's Dojo supercomputer. Since taking the helm at Tenstorrent, he has bet the company on RISC-V, the free and open instruction set architecture that anyone can license or extend — a deliberate rejection of the proprietary lock-in that defines Nvidia's CUDA, Arm's licensing model and the closed x86 duopoly.
Keller has been a consistent and public evangelist for openness in computing, arguing repeatedly that the industry needs hardware and software stacks customers can inspect and modify rather than rent on the incumbents' terms. That philosophy is precisely what makes Tenstorrent valuable to a would-be challenger — and what makes the prospect of it disappearing inside a $170-billion-plus conglomerate so consequential.
Why Qualcomm Wants In
Qualcomm dominates on-device AI inference — the Snapdragon and Oryon silicon inside phones and Copilot+ PCs — but it is a latecomer to the data center, where Nvidia commands the overwhelming majority of AI training and inference spend. Qualcomm's own answer, the Hexagon-based AI200 and AI250 inference accelerators, is only due to ship in 2026.
Tenstorrent offers a shortcut: RISC-V-based AI accelerators and data-center-grade CPU IP, plus the architects to evolve them. The move also dovetails with Qualcomm's roughly $3.9 billion all-stock acquisition of Modular, whose Mojo language and MAX inference engine let developers run AI models across Nvidia, AMD, Intel and Qualcomm silicon without rewriting code. Together, the two deals commit well over $13 billion to a single proposition: giving cloud providers a credible way to run AI workloads on hardware that does not say Nvidia on the box.
The Bigger Picture: Consolidation, Openness and Sovereignty
The talks crystallize three forces reshaping the AI silicon market. The first is consolidation: with capital flooding toward anyone who can dent Nvidia's near-monopoly, independent challengers are being absorbed into deep-pocketed strategics before they can scale on their own.
The second is the contest between open and proprietary architectures. Tenstorrent's RISC-V foundation is the clearest commercial bet that an open ISA can compete at the high end against CUDA and Arm. Folding that bet into Qualcomm would hand the company, in Tom's Hardware's words, status as "the leading developer of RISC-V-based solutions in general" — but it also raises the question of whether an open-architecture champion can stay genuinely open inside a patent-driven licensing giant.
The third is supply-chain sovereignty. RISC-V's royalty-free, license-anywhere model has become geopolitically attractive precisely because it is not controlled by any single vendor or jurisdiction. Concentrating that expertise inside one U.S. company could accelerate Western RISC-V development — or, critics will argue, narrow the open ecosystem it was meant to widen.
What to Watch
Three things will tell the tale. First, price structure: whether the $8–10 billion is paid up front or tied to performance milestones, a signal of how much risk Qualcomm sees in Tenstorrent's roadmap. Second, Intel: a competing bid could push the figure higher or scuttle the deal entirely. And third, Jim Keller himself — acquisitions of star architects live or die on whether the star stays. Keller has walked away from giants before. Whether he signs on to build RISC-V inside Qualcomm, or moves on as he has at Apple, AMD and Tesla, may matter more than any number in the term sheet.
