While Microsoft Build 2026 commanded the stage in Redmond, Alibaba quietly dropped what may be the most economically consequential AI release of the week. Qwen3.7-Plus reached general availability on June 1, 2026, and it does something no other model in its price bracket can: it sees screens, understands video, reasons over million-token contexts, and writes working code — all inside a single API endpoint, at a fraction of what frontier rivals charge.

What Shipped
Qwen3.7-Plus is the multimodal sibling of Alibaba's text-only Qwen 3.7 Max flagship. Where Max is a premium reasoning engine for pure-text work, Plus extends the same agentic backbone with vision and video understanding — accepting text, images, and video as input and returning text output. It is, in Alibaba's own framing, a perception-and-reasoning agent rather than a generative vision model: it reads a screen and grounds a click target, it answers questions about a frame of video, but it will not draw you an image.
The model carries a 1,000,000-token context window with up to 65,536 output tokens and an internal chain-of-thought reasoning budget of up to 256,000 tokens. It is served as the `qwen3.7-plus` endpoint on Alibaba Cloud Model Studio, reachable via OpenAI-compatible APIs across Beijing, Singapore, and US-Virginia regions. A preview surfaced on the public LM Arena leaderboard around May 14, giving developers roughly 18 days of live inference signal before the commercial GA dropped the "-Preview" suffix.

The Specs That Matter
The benchmark headline is ScreenSpot Pro, Alibaba's GUI-grounding evaluation. Qwen3.7-Plus scores 79.0 on that benchmark — ahead of GPT-5.4 at 67.4 and Claude Opus 4.6 at 49.5 in the vendor's own comparison table. The model also leads on AndroidWorld mobile navigation with 81.0 (versus Gemini 3.1 Pro's 70.7) and posts 91.7 on MRCR-v2 128k long-context retrieval, the highest in Alibaba's comparison set. Terminal-Bench 2.0 comes in at 70.3.
The independent read is more measured but still positive. Artificial Analysis placed Qwen3.7-Plus at number 53 of 164 models on its Intelligence Index — described as "well above average" rather than frontier-grade — at roughly 52.9 tokens per second output speed. The model trailed on pure-text software engineering: SWE-Bench Pro lands at approximately 57.6, about three points behind its own Max sibling at 60.6, and below Claude Opus 4.6 Max at 80.8.
The trade is legible: Plus buys perception and price. It pays a modest tax on text-only coding depth.
The Price Is the Story
At $0.40 per million input tokens and $1.60 per million output tokens, Qwen3.7-Plus costs roughly six times less on input than Qwen 3.7 Max ($2.50/$7.50). For agent workloads — where tool loops, screenshots, and long running contexts pour tokens through the prompt side far faster than the model emits them — that difference in input pricing is not a footnote. It is the difference between an agent that is economical to run at scale and one that is a demo. No other multimodal model in this tier pairs comparable screen-reading capability with this price point.
One caveat: Artificial Analysis measured the model generating roughly 110 million output tokens during evaluation against a 29 million median. At $1.60 per million on the output side, that verbosity tax can quietly erode the cheap-input advantage in production loops.
The Strategic Pivot Hidden in Plain Sight
The most consequential line in the release is not a benchmark score. It is two words: proprietary, API-only.
Alibaba built its AI reputation on permissively licensed open weights. Earlier Qwen generations attracted global adoption precisely because teams could self-host. Qwen3.7-Plus ships with no open-weight checkpoints on Hugging Face, and Qwen 3.7 Max is closed as well. Third-party speculation about a Q3 open-weight variant is unconfirmed. For now, the 3.7 family is closed frontier.
This pivot signals that Alibaba is making the same calculation US labs made earlier: API control, not open-weight distribution, is how you capture enterprise value in the current cycle. The irony is that China's most celebrated open-model lab is converging toward the same posture as OpenAI and Anthropic — at precisely the moment those labs face pressure to open up.

Qwen3.7-Plus lands in a market where the gap is closing fast. In six months, Chinese labs — Alibaba, DeepSeek, MiniMax — have delivered models independent evaluators now place within striking range of Western frontier systems, often at dramatically lower prices. The competitive dynamic has shifted from raw capability to economic efficiency: Chinese labs no longer compete on being merely open and cheap; they compete on being capable and cheap. Qwen3.7-Plus is the clearest current example, and it has removed cost as a reliable advantage for Western incumbents.
What to Watch
Three things worth tracking. First, whether independent evaluators can replicate the ScreenSpot Pro figure of 79.0 on standardized harnesses — that number is the linchpin of the GUI-agent positioning and was measured with thinking disabled. Second, whether Alibaba confirms or rules out open-weight checkpoints for the 3.7 family; the strategic direction of China's leading AI lab hangs on that answer. Third, watch adoption velocity among enterprise agent builders: if teams that previously chose open-weight Qwen migrate to the API-only endpoint, it signals closed-weight convenience is winning even among the developers who most valued openness.
The model is real, the price is real, and the pivot away from open weights is real. The benchmark supremacy is worth a validation pass before you route production traffic.
