# GitHub Launches Copilot App as Agent-Native Desktop Experience in Technical Preview

The IDE was the cockpit of software development for decades. At Microsoft Build 2026 on June 2, GitHub signaled that the cockpit is getting a wholesale redesign -- one built not for a single developer typing code, but for a human directing a fleet of AI agents.

The new GitHub Copilot App is a standalone desktop application for Windows 11, macOS, and Linux that reimagines how developers interact with AI-assisted coding. Rather than bolting agent capabilities onto an existing editor, GitHub built a dedicated control center where multiple AI agents can run in parallel, each tackling separate tasks across connected repositories -- all visible from a single unified dashboard called My Work.

From Editor Extension to Command Center

The Copilot App represents a philosophical departure from the autocomplete-style AI assistance that launched GitHub Copilot in 2021. Where the original tool predicted the next line of code inside VS Code, the new app is designed for developers who are orchestrating, not just writing.

"While the agentic shift has made development faster, it has also led to disjointed workflows, more context switching, and too much time spent reviewing agent-generated code," wrote Mario Rodriguez, GitHub's Chief Product Officer, in the official announcement. The app, he explained, is GitHub's answer to that fragmentation.

From the My Work view, developers see active agent sessions, open issues, pull requests, and background automations across every connected repository. Three session modes offer escalating levels of autonomy: Interactive, where the developer collaborates step-by-step with the agent; Plan, where the agent proposes a course of action and waits for approval; and Autopilot, where the agent runs fully autonomously.

Each session operates inside its own isolated git worktree -- a real, separate copy of a branch -- so multiple agents can work on the same repository simultaneously without creating merge conflicts. The app handles all the worktree setup and cleanup automatically, eliminating a tedious layer of branch management.

Agent Merge and Canvases: The Headline Features

Two features stand out in the technical preview. The first is Agent Merge, a capability that follows a pull request through its entire lifecycle. Once a PR is open, Agent Merge monitors CI checks, downloads failure logs, responds to reviewer comments, resolves merge conflicts, and completes the merge when all conditions are satisfied. Critically, it respects existing branch-protection rules -- if a repository requires human review approval, the agent stops and waits rather than bypassing the gate.

The second is Canvases, which GitHub describes as bidirectional work surfaces for humans and agents. A canvas might display a plan, a pull request diff, a terminal session, or a deployment dashboard. Agents update the canvas in real time as they work, while developers can edit, reorder, or redirect actions on the same surface. GitHub frames this as the beginning of what it calls agent experience, or AX -- the interface layer where human judgment and AI execution meet.

The Numbers Behind the Shift

The scale of activity on GitHub underscores why the company is making this bet. According to the Build 2026 announcement, commits on the platform have nearly doubled year over year, crossing 1.4 billion per month. GitHub Actions usage now exceeds 2 billion minutes per week. That velocity is increasingly agent-driven, and GitHub needs infrastructure that can keep pace.

Early adopters are already reporting dramatic productivity gains. Rob Bos, a Microsoft MVP and DevOps consultant who has been using the app as a daily driver during the preview period, documented 368 pull requests merged in 30 days on his open-source projects alone. "Amazing to see what a person can do and achieve these days," Bos wrote on DevOps Journal, noting he now spends roughly 95 percent of his coding time inside the Copilot App rather than VS Code or the CLI.

Enterprise users are taking notice as well. David Jobling, Master Technology Architect at Avanade, called the app "a much-needed control center for agentic development," adding that his Forward Deployed Engineers can now "dispatch a cohort of agents and manage multiple initiatives, all from one location."

A Crowded Desktop Race

GitHub is not building in a vacuum. Anthropic shipped a redesigned Claude Code desktop client in April 2026 with parallel agent sessions. Anysphere released Cursor 3 with an Agents Window on April 2, featuring worktree-based isolation and cloud execution environments. OpenAI launched a native Codex coding tool for Windows in March. Each is vying to become the primary surface through which developers direct AI agents.

GitHub's competitive edge is integration. The Copilot App starts from the issues, pull requests, and branch-protection rules a developer already uses on the platform that hosts over 200 million repositories. It runs on a mix of models from Anthropic, OpenAI, and GitHub itself, configurable per organization. And the newly generally available Copilot SDK -- shipping in Node.js, TypeScript, Python, Go, .NET, Rust, and Java -- exposes the same agentic runtime that powers the app, letting teams build custom internal tools on the same foundation.

Access and What Comes Next

The Copilot App is available now in technical preview for Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business, and Enterprise subscribers. Pro and Pro+ users can join a public waitlist, while Business and Enterprise access is rolling out on an organizational basis. Free GitHub plans are excluded. No mobile clients are planned for this phase -- GitHub is positioning the app squarely for sustained desktop development sessions.

One cost detail worth watching: starting June 1, 2026, Copilot Code Review began consuming GitHub Actions minutes, introducing a new recurring expense for Business and Enterprise customers already adjusting to the agentic workflow model.

The larger question is whether developers will embrace a dedicated app for agent orchestration or prefer agents embedded in the editors they already know. GitHub is betting that as the number of concurrent AI sessions grows, a purpose-built control center will become not just convenient but necessary. If the early productivity numbers hold, that bet may pay off faster than anyone expected.
