The changes, detailed in a May 6 blog post from Google, represent the company's most aggressive move yet to blend community-sourced perspectives with its generative AI search experience. Two years after AI Overviews debuted to mixed reviews and memorable hallucinations, Google is doubling down on the idea that firsthand human experience belongs at the center of AI-powered answers rather than at the margins.
How the New Feature Works
When a user submits a query that benefits from real-world experience, AI Overviews will now display a dedicated section featuring direct quotes from public online discussions, social media, and what Google describes as "other firsthand sources." In sample screenshots shared by Google, the section included attributed quotes from Reddit threads, WordPress blogs, and specialized forums, each displayed above a link to the original source.
Google is also enriching the metadata around these citations. Each quoted source will now display a creator's name, handle, or community name, giving users contextual clues about where the advice originates before they click through. The company explained the rationale in its announcement, noting that for many searches people are increasingly seeking out advice from others, and that AI responses will now include a preview of perspectives from public online discussions, social media, and other firsthand sources.
Beyond the community quotes, Google is rolling out several companion features. AI responses will now recommend in-depth articles at the end of generated answers for users who want to go deeper. Links to sources will appear inline next to specific claims rather than being clustered at the bottom of the response. And for users who subscribe to publications through their Google accounts, the system will highlight and label content from those subscriptions within AI results.
