# New Unified Audio Language Model Handles Understanding, Generation, and Reasoning in One System

Researchers from NVIDIA and Carnegie Mellon University have introduced UALM, a Unified Audio Language Model that combines audio understanding, text-to-audio generation, and multimodal reasoning into a single architecture. Accepted as an oral presentation at ICLR 2026 in Rio de Janeiro -- one of the conference's highest honors -- the paper demonstrates that a unified model can match the performance of state-of-the-art specialized systems across all three capabilities, while introducing a first-of-its-kind cross-modal reasoning mechanism that lets the model think in both text and audio.

The Problem: Fragmented Audio AI

The audio AI landscape has long been divided into silos. Architecture: From Qwen to Unified Audio

UALM is built on Qwen2.5-7B, a 7-billion-parameter text language model with established reasoning capabilities. The researchers extended it with audio perception and generation modules. For audio input, the model uses an encoder that converts raw audio into representations the language model can process alongside text. For audio output, UALM predicts X-Codec audio tokens -- discrete representations of sound that can be decoded back into waveforms.

The team first validated the generation approach in isolation with UALM-Gen, a smaller 1.5-billion-parameter model focused exclusively on text-to-audio generation. UALM-Gen directly predicts audio tokens autoregressively, the same way a language model predicts the next word, and achieves quality comparable to state-of-the-art diffusion-based generators. This result is significant on its own: it demonstrates that the autoregressive language modeling paradigm, which has dominated text AI, can compete with diffusion models in the audio domain.

The full 7B UALM model was then trained on a mixture of audio generation, audio understanding, and text-only tasks. The researchers found that audio generation data needed to be upweighted during training because generation proved harder to learn than understanding. An additional warmup stage was applied before full finetuning to stabilize the multitask learning process.

UALM-Reason: Thinking in Sound

The paper's most novel contribution is UALM-Reason, a multimodal reasoning framework that lets the model use both text and audio in its intermediate thinking steps. This is the first demonstration of cross-modal generative reasoning in audio research.

UALM-Reason supports three distinct reasoning capabilities. Enrichment allows the model to take a brief text prompt and elaborate it into a detailed caption before generating audio, producing richer and more nuanced sound outputs. Dialogue enables iterative refinement, where a user can converse with the model to progressively shape the desired audio output. Self-reflection is perhaps the most striking: the model generates audio, listens to its own output, evaluates what it produced, and then generates an improved version.

The self-reflection capability represents a genuine closed loop -- a system that can critique and improve its own creative output without human intervention. Subjective evaluations by human listeners confirmed that UALM-Reason produces meaningfully better audio outputs compared to single-pass generation, validating the practical value of the reasoning pipeline.

Benchmarks and Results

The unified UALM model matches state-of-the-art specialized models across its three target domains. In audio understanding, it performs comparably to dedicated audio captioning and question-answering systems. In text-to-audio generation, it rivals diffusion-based models that were purpose-built for synthesis. And critically, it preserves the text reasoning capabilities inherited from its Qwen2.5 foundation, avoiding the catastrophic forgetting that often accompanies multitask training.

The research team -- led by Jinchuan Tian of Carnegie Mellon University alongside NVIDIA researchers including Sang-gil Lee, Zhifeng Kong, Sreyan Ghosh, and senior authors Wei Ping, Rafael Valle, and Bryan Catanzaro -- emphasizes that achieving parity with specialized models is the central result. The goal was not to exceed every benchmark but to prove that unification is possible without meaningful performance degradation.

Why Unified Audio Models Matter

UALM arrives at a moment when the AI industry is rapidly expanding beyond text and images. Audio is the next frontier for multimodal systems, encompassing speech, music, sound effects, environmental sounds, and their interactions with visual and textual information. The applications range from content creation tools that can generate soundscapes from descriptions, to accessibility systems that can understand and describe audio environments, to interactive AI assistants that can reason about what they hear.

The trend toward unification is not unique to audio. Apple's MANZANO, also presented at ICLR 2026, takes a similar approach for vision -- combining image understanding and generation in one model. Google's Gemini and OpenAI's GPT-4o have pursued multimodal unification across text, images, and audio in their commercial products. UALM provides a rigorous academic foundation for the audio-specific component of this broader trend, with the added innovation of cross-modal reasoning.

NVIDIA's involvement is also notable. The company's ADLR (Applied Deep Learning Research) lab has been steadily building an audio intelligence portfolio, including the ETTA text-to-audio model.
